The reluctor is on the opposite side of the cam from the VVT. The camshaft position sensor gets it's reading or trigger off the reluctor. It's more likely that the chain stretched or the tensioner failed and it jumped time which is why the reluctor appears to be in the wrong position (its actually the cam assembly is out of time)....

The disc that triggers the camshaft position sensor on the transmission end of the camshafts.
I agreed, the timing chain may have jumped a tooth , mostly because of stretching or broken front guide or front guide lower bolt backing out!
I recommend installing a ZZP front guide

These will extend the life of your timing chain!
