Whizzing noise

My first post all.
I have a 2007 HHR that has a whizzing, whinning noise that comes from the passenger side of the car. Jacked up the car and put it on jackstands. Had my son put it in drive and accelerate a little. Whinning got louder as he gave it gas. Used a stethescope and isolated the noise where the trans and the axle meet. Can it be the output shaft seal? Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Wheel hubs are new. No clicking when turning.
Thanks

Bad seals don't make noise, they leak. Sounds more like possibly a bearing. Could be the drive or driven sprocket support bearings, or gear bearing (most often it's the driven sprocket support bearing) in the transmission where the axle rides.

Where did you have the jackstands? If they were under the framing/unibody then the suspension was hanging down suspended? You should try jackstands or blocks under the front suspension to compress the struts as if it was on the ground. A little tricky to do on these cars, but will give you a truer diagnosis.

Fwiw. Based on your description, sounds like a trans. problem like db/sb stated above.

Did you check your brake pads? The sound the wear indicators make is a whizzing type. Just dealt with that today, I didn't automatically think pads because they weren't THAT old (yes they were).

And, if the control arms are hanging while the trans is in gear bad things can happen and bad sounds can happen. Like firemangeorge said.
