Exclamation 2.4L Timing and such

So... 18, just bought my first car. I bought a 2006 HHR with the 2.4L 4 cyl. Its throwing a code for timing, from what the people I bought it from are saying. I haven't had a chance to take it to a part store and have them scan it, so I can see for myself. Upon startup, it rattles like a jar of marbles, then it levels out, but at an idle it sounds like it has a bigger cam (Even though I know it doesn't). Anywho, with all that said, if it is a timing chain or tensioner problem, what kit would you recommend? Thanks

First find out the code NUMBER. Then come back here and post it. There is no such thing as "a code for timing".

My wild guess is it is a P0017, which indicates a new timing set.

X2 on Don's statement to get the actual code. Also include the mileage on the car. If it's high mileage and needs a timing chain set, you should also replace the balance shaft chain as well. AND, while you're in there, a new water pump would be a good idea.

Timing chain...

Also, it wouldn't be a great idea to keep driving around as if it's "okay" just because it "levels out" after startup. You could grenade the engine completely. Get the codes read and then park it until you get that fixed.

Welcome to the site. As for kits, I recommend Cloyes, they are listed in our common part numbers thread
