I believe you can go back to stock with the Hypertech

The reviews I've read on other forums all say that it does what it says it will do. I haven't seen a review from an HHR owner though. My thoughts are that having the ability to tune it yourself for premium or regular and being able to go back to the original factory tune is a plus.

Just a heads up if you happen to find one that was previously owned.

"After a Hypertech Programmer has been USED, the programmer downloads the factory settings and stores the information and uploads the new modified settings to your vehicles computer. Doing so, now puts the programmer into a state known as VIN LOCKED. The programmer will only work on the vehicle where the VIN ( Vehicle Identification Number ) matches the one downloaded from the computer.
If the last owner has NOT returned the vehicle to FACTORY SETTINGS, the programmer is USELESS. When the last owner returns the vehicle to factory settings in the options menu on the programmer, the programmer uploads the factory settings back to the computer, and clears the memory on the programmer.
Always ask the seller whether or not the last vehicle has been returned to Stock, or whether or not the programmer is VIN Locked."

On my old truck, the first computer upgrade was a Jet PCM, which was nothing more than a piggy back system. Good for it's day, but there was nothing else really. Then I went with a Hypertech, better than the PCM.

Then I went with a custom tune after those became available. I makes a Hypertech a nice looking paperweight. So much more can be done for much less $$$ with a custom tune. If you can find one that the VIN hasn't been locked for cheap, give it a try. For the cost of a new one, no way.

Less money for a custom tune? Through who? A custom tune is nice if you have the equipment to revert back to stock but if not, the Hypertech is the way to go. I'm just going to hold off on a tune until after my factory warranty is up, if I decide I can't wait, I'll pick up the Hypertech. The dealers never once pulled a code when I ran my Hypertech in the S-10...of course I always made sure to take it back to stock before taking it in for service.

Tune I had was from Wait4Me. Again, this was on a 96 Silverado. For him to build the tune and send me a new computer was under $200 back then, compared to about $400 for a Hypertech, and I could get free updates with the tune. Good news was I still had the stock computer, so I could just drop that back in if I had to send the programmed one in for something.

Man that is cheap! Trifecta's seem to run about $300 which is cheaper than the Hypertech option, but that doesn't get you a cable. A cable is $250 so $550 for a tune and option to change basically. HPTuner you have to buy credits and the equipment which I think is pretty expensive. I've found a couple of local guys to them for $300, but I'm not sure how much they charge to revert back to stock. I know these guys here live and breath by their tunes...I've never had one but I know the Hypertech for the money is not a bad buy.

Yea, it's a lot different to tune an HHR or something similiar compared to my truck. 10 minutes and you can swap out the computer. Not sure what his prices are today.

I ordered the Hypertech unit. Won't be in until next Tuesday. I'll report on it next week.
