Electric welding on an HHR

I want to install a new muffler, but can't justify the charges by the muffler shops just to weld a muffler on. Muffler $75.. Install $125-$200. I have welders and can weld my own muffler on.

My question is: What effect or problem can be caused by electric (Mig/TIG/Arc) welding on the exhaust?

I know on some vehicles, you must disconnect the battery before welding or you will damage the computer. Do you need to do this on an HHR?

Have no fear, Bob! I've welded quite a bit on mine, just have the battery disconnected as you say! I've had no electrical issues after welding.

I have heard that you cant tig weld on a car with computers on them because the high frequencies messes the electronic componets up?

In the OEM bumper for now...once the chrome steel bumpers are in place...well, not sure where they'll be

That's why you disconnect the battery cables.

i welded on many cars without disconnecting the battery. i doubt the muffler shop would disconnect it either.

Had mine welded on by a muffler shop, they didn't disconnect anything. You would probably be okay to, being as how the exhaust hooks to the motor and it is definately grounded. Anything else though and I would disconnect it.

Oh, I'm lovin the Magnum above. :thumb: Show some pics when done.

We see problems when guys weld on frames without diconnecting the battery. It fries the computer. That's why was asking.
