if you dont want to carry a spare, you could cut that part out, weld in sheet metal to cover the whole, and the rest is upto you.

Why anyone would want to drive around without a spare is beyond me!?!

That's just pushing it too far....

What if you have run flat tires? I didn't carry a spare in my Mustang because I had run flats.

Yeah - OK, well...one exception. How many HHR owners have them? I think at this point, most are running on stock tires.

Of course, I have a family to worry about. There's no way I'm letting my wife and kid ride in a car with no spare.

First off, my apologies for using SoCal's exhaust routing picture.

The below is a VERY rough change on how it COULD be accomplished without causing any issues with the gas tank, fuel lines or evap equipment.

Bear in mind, I would NEVER attempt such a thing but only doing this as a possible senario for the before posted picture.

Cheers,
E

Yeah, we looked at that option. The two main problems are:

a) the crossover pipe will be visible from behind as the tire bay is too low.

b) the tire bay would be subject to excessive heat, which could damage the spare tire.

Your ovalized crossover pipe might work. Whenever you run a "Y" like this the flow into the furthest outlet is conpromised anyway, it's usually about 75/25% flow, as exhaust gases always take the path of least resistance.

We are just trying to address safety issues, as safety is more important than looks anyday!

Yes the flow is compromised but the heat issue would be somewhat addressed because of the reduced volume of exhaust gases. With the ovalized piping it would not be visible from behind. One could also add resonating tips to further reduce excess exhaust volume/sound.

Again, this is not my idea of a good dual exhaust but a possible solution for the questioned exhaust on the pictured HHR.

:)
