Scanner was a pro unit of my Nissan master tech's; code was 0304, stated "Cyl 4 misfire; The numbers were given via the scanner while engine running. Plugs were original.

Plugs were original? On a nearly 20 year old car that you just bought? How can you be sure? Compression test is free and easy, the tool is usually available as a "loaner" from chain auto parts stores.

I still don't know what those random numbers mean.

My bet is the valve timing system needs attention.

The car had 94,000 miles on it. If it's compression, why doesn't it miss all the time? It may go two weeks and a couple hundred miles before it does it and restarting seems to eliminate the small miss.

You said plugs were original, have you replaced the plugs?

I meant I replaced them with the same number plugs (as found in the manual) at 95,000 miles and that they were original to the car when I changed them out, along with new coils from Auto Zone.
