Exclamation Since I've joined No one talked about this,, its time..

Okay... Spark Plugs... and people with engine mods.. No one seems to worry about changing their spark plugs... What am I talking about..??? Well with more engine mods, (exhaust/air intake) the engine is getting hotter.. yes.. hotter.. you need to get a cooler range of spark plugs for your car.. I've changed mine the day I got it... Your stock AC Delco is 41-981 its equal to the Denso ITV16, normal range plug.. what you now need is the ITV20 colder range plug... okay thank me again...

There is no real reason to change them on a un-modded or lightly modded engine. This was a popular discussion on the Mustang boards I used to be on.

What about a thicker gauge spark plug wire and MSD ignition kits?

Whenever stuff comes out. The aftermarket is being too slow with our vehicle. I want to have a few choices of each part before I start modding my engine. I don't want to keep tossing the first thing that comes out on my HHR only to change it a few months down the road when something better comes out. I also don't want to go too overboard with my HHR because I know there isn't any real potential for power and I would be wiser to spend the money on my Malibu which has the potential for true power.

I too would love some engine mods, but I really have no plans on being the test subject. I know were not going to get 300 hp, but a couple of simple engine mods would be nice.

Unless your DIC is showing hotter than 196-degrees consistently, ther is no reason to go to a colder range plug - especially with a stock engine. Adding an intake generally increases airflow to the engine and the computer compensates for this (within its range). If anything, an engine with only an intake added will run cooler.

If you have flashed your ECU for performance, things could change, but I just don't see the need to change plug ranges unless you have seen the evidence of overheating on the plugs themselves. With anti-knock controls and auto mixture compensation, today's modern vehicles rarely require this.

To each there own...
Each person should evaluate their own mods... remove and inspect their plugs and make changes as necessary....
I've done mods for years.. and these are one of the items over looked... You always want your vehicle to operate at the lowest coolest range as possible.. every little bit helps..
