From GM, no......

If there's anything in "kit" form it would probably be a Cobalt kit that you modified to fit under the HHR hood.

get a Gm Supercharger kit out of the junkyard and then have someone tune it

The Cobalt SS 2.4 was naturally aspirated (no supercharger or turbo) and was automatic only. If you wanted an auto in the early days of the Cobalt, and wanted an SS, this is what you got. I know, I had one. I also turbocharged it. See this thread:

It didn't work. Even with Alpine Engineering doing the work (they invented, and still produce, the Toyota TRD Supercharger), we never got the computer in the 2.4 to work with the turbo. At one time Haan had a set-up for the 2.4. To make it work they went to a recirculating fuel system so they could control rail pressure as a method of controlling added fuel under boost.

If you are going to make this work, you need a lot of experience and knowledge in turbocharging late-model CAN-bus OBD II computerized systems. More than I had (and I kinow a lot about it) and more than Alpine had (and they are experts in this).

I've got a 2.4 turbo. If I knew what I'd go through, I would have kept the ZEX set-up. Still a work in progress. There are no kits for a 2.4 HHR anywhere.

First, to LewiSS.... Hey, man, I've tuned 3 Cobalt 2.4 SS manuals. They do exist! :wink:

For anyone else interested in boosting the 2.4:

No full kit exists for either S/C or turbo applications. However, both can be done. Any good turbo kit for the Cobalts will work, except for the charge piping. The HHR, while on the Delta platform, is much narrower and has less depth on the front end, compared to the Cobalts. But some skilled fabrication for either S/C or turbo would work.

As for tuning.... The '06 & '07 HHRs used the E67 ECM. The calibration tables are already there (although not used stock) to provide proper fueling for boost up to 11.6 PSI. The later ('08 and up) E37 ECM has even more leeway. In most cases there is no need for any boost referenced return type fuel systems.

Unfortunately, many "expert" tuners can't see this. I've seen numerous examples of "toons" that did not properly calibrate for boosted conditions.

Bottom line: YES, it can be done, either S/C or turbo!!! :twothumbs:

Just be REAL CAREFUL of who your tuner is! :wink:

Thanks, JoeR. I was doing all this in 2006, blazing a trail. I know the knowledge base has improved. At the time, there simply wasn't sufficient knowledge to get it to work reliably. The system we put on mine was simple, clean, and very nice. Too bad we couldn't get it to work tune-wise (it worked mechanically like a dream!).

Hey JoeR, Ive been seriously considering the S/C mod for my 2008 2.2. Do you have any experience with doing one on an auto trans? It looks like there is less room at the front due to the engine being angled forward more. Im wondering if there is still enough room for the blower when the engine rocks under acceleration.

I have been running the ZZP SC kit for almost a year now. I bet their turbo kit would work as well. It fit fine with minor adjustments in the engine bay. Lucky for us the Cobalt has drawn a lot of attention and since our HHR is pretty much the same platform that makes it easy to find parts. I don't even bother looking HHR parts. Instead if I am looking for performance parts I search for Cobalt stuff. This engine(2.4) makes great power with moderate boost since the compression and displacement are larger. I took the time to learn HPTuners though. The mechanical stuff is easy compared to working out all the bugs when it comes to tuning. It has been a fun project overall.
