VVT Codes P0016 & P0017 HELP!!!
 

I have a 2006 HHR LT1 with a 2.4 M5. It's got 222000 miles and still runs great, even with the codes. My questions is this, I replaced both intake and exhaust VVT Actuator and still have the codes. Four years ago I replace the intake and exhaust Camshaft Positioning sensors and the O2 Sensor. The O2 sensor continued with a code and when I talked to the mechanic about it I was told he had rushed the job (my fault) and put a non-OEM O2 sensor in. The second mechanic told me I NEEDED an OEM sensor. I got the new sensor and the problem resolved. This time I got the VVT Actuators from RockAuto and they are not OEM. They are actually 'Standard' brand'? Is this the same issue as before? Do I need OEM parts for this also. I have about three weeks to return these sensors if they are the problem.

P0017 is NOT a sensor problem. It is a timing chain problem.

Most likely replacing the timing chain and guides will cure both codes.

Timing Chain, tensioner, balance shaft guide and chain guides were replaced at 192382 miles. I am now at 221755 miles. That was just over 3 1/2 years ago 10/2015.

P0016 & P0017 means that the chain is too long. Maybe a bad tensioner or guide or sprocket or chain.

x2 what they said - tis time to pull it apart and check the chain, and guides etc. .

He said "Timing Chain, tensioner, balance shaft guide and chain guides were replaced at 192382 miles" And he is now 221755 miles. That should have lasted a whole lot more than 29K miles.

True, when one sees the prices being so low, one had to wonder about the quality. It'll be interesting to see what those parts look like in this one. Ya think there is a chance it might have been an installation problem?

I'm glad my 2006 never encountered that issue with the timing chain and related parts. I lucked out.
