And, how did you do it? Was it a DIY project, or a purchased piece? Am interested in some details.

Magic!

It was part DIY, part purchase. Some of my methodology owes thanks to "CJ".

I found a shift knob (intended for a manual transmission) which was made by Autologix. It fit well onto the metal rod that the stock knob attaches to. Since the auto trans requires a button to be pushed to shift (and to get your keys out of the ignition), I had to come up with a way to push the inner part of the rod down (it has a plastic dowel in there). Through some experimentation, I found a metal spacer that fit the inner diameter of the rod & would allow for engaging the button (which no longer exists) by pushing down on the dice, which in turn pushes the spacer & then the plastic dowel.

It takes some work... but it's well worth it:one:

Ha! It's actually smaller than I had hoped... my fault for not reading the dimensions before ordering. I had envisioned a huge rat rod shifter. I'd like to extend the metal rod, so the knob is just below my eye level, but that would totally block the cupholders when in "D" :(
