Home burglar alarms no longer effective
Dekalb County, GA has 700 burglaries a month with pop. of 650,000.
So the latest burglar cut the telephone line on Wed. and removed the plywood sheet I put over the broken window from the last burglary in Nov. I had about 13 wood screws in the sheet, and he unscrewed 10 of them. Then he went through the house, stole some audio equipment, and found the extra key for the HHR in a cluttered desk drawer. So the police came, took the report, and left. I looked in the cluttered drawer 3 times for the key, and couldn't find it. Previous experience showed me that burglars don't come back, but this one did about 9:30 pm. I saw the HHR going out the driveway with the taillights on.
When I realized the key was gone, I should have disconnected the battery, or cleaned out the garage space that is currently filled with other stuf, and locked the car in it. Holding and putting the plywood sheet back up with nails wore me out, and I didn't do either. Everything clicked into place for the burglar to steal the car. I also should have put the extra key in the safe in the cellar, but didn't. We will see if the insurance adjuster says I didn't do enough to prevenet the theft.
Having a cut telephone line and no car really limits my ability to get anything done. I have rented a car, and am typing this at work.
The burglars have learned to be in and out of a house so fast that the police can't get there in time to catch them.
So now I'm going to get a wireless burglar alarm, and have to get some new windows that can't be broken through. I hope I can find some.
Where can anyone go to get away from thieves?

A friend of mine a ... few ... years ago had his car broken into while at work ... with a guard on duty ... and cameras on the lot. When he came out to go home (at night) he didn't understand why the dome light was on. It seems someone had stolen the passenger side door right off the car. Never did find the SOB.

Wow!! Thats some ****ty Luck.
I've got that same one on my wheels...they are pretty standard.
In fact, my socket they gave me when the wheels were put on broke...and I called and asked them if I could get another one. They said sure...just bring the car in and we'll take care of ya. I said...well 2 of the wheels are loose, so I can't drive it...but could I send my boyfriend to get another one? They said sure...so I sent him with the old one and they gave him a new one.
Now...how did they know I was telling the truth? They didn't ask me to send him with the old one...I offered to do it so we made sure I got the right one. Plus...when he got there, they didn't have the exact same thing and gave him something else...so those aren't that special in my opinion. Sure freaked me out...I thought they were special lugnuts. NOT!!!
Sorry to hear about your wheels. Unfortunately wheel theft has been going on since the beginning of time and considering the economy now, I don't expect it to get any better. It's a crying shame.
