to stand out out and look like crap. Ive been wanting to paint mine also I just think it looks way tacky being black(since my car is white). Dont really think it has a purpose at least none that I can tell.

Bumper insert

I, too, always wondered what the insert was for, serves no purpose except to ruin the lines of the bumper.
I took a dremel with a 3/16" stone and cut the groove around it a bit deeper and filled it with a plastic epoxy. Then I painted it with high fill primer to eliminate the 'grain', and then painted the entire bumper. I did this the same time that I did a mastectomy. The whole front bumper looks a lot cleaner now. I also moved the license plate to below the top bumper.
I still have picts in my camera of the whole proceedure...

DON'T DO IT! YOU WILL DIE!

No, not really, but I think it may be for European license plates. I.E. a different insert to accommodate the wide plate.

Could the purpose have been visual - to 'round out' that condenser killer opening under the bumper?

Painted mine out too; I like the looks much better.

Could the insert be there to make the bumper a little more rigid?
