Removing gold from behind bowtie

Has anyone taken the bowties off the hatch and grille, remove all the gold foil from behind and paint the back of the bowtie then reinstall?
My rear bowtie is starting to bubble and i have a flame vynil decal over the bowties I'd like to keep and remove the gold and paint red.

I know everybody seems to hate the gold....... I like the gold but hate the fact that my gold bowties, the back one anyways, look like cr@p because of the separation....... I was thinking of trying to remove just the plastic bit and re-coat in gold metallic, leaving the "amber" plastic showing, to keep that deep look...... Not sure what to reattach them with that won't effect the paint.

Does 3M make a tape like the foam trim tape that very thin?

Yeah, I have some. It's about 1/8" thick maybe less.

So, let me get this straight......the bowties are a tinted (yellowish) plastic with a gold or silver foil to give it the deeper gold color? Wonder what it would look like if I paint the back bright, bright red. Probably come out maroonish?

maybe more orange tinted red.....

Another thing to note, there's a photo in the members section of one of these somebody tried to take apart and cracked the "gold" part....... Care should be used if they are still stuck in place fairly well.

I removed the emblem, carefully heated and pried the translucent part off of the backing, then sanded the paint off the backside, used 800 grit, then polishing compound, then sprayed with candy apple red, then silver (normal candy apple process), then bonded it back on. Needless to say it does not really look "candy apple", although it has some nice "depth" to it, it is obviously much less work to just mask and spray it with your favorite color.
