Stock Grille Mods

I've been toying around with this idea:

http://www.socalhhr.citymax.com/i/Hi...rille_Idea.jpg

That's cutting out 2 of the bars, taping off the bowtie, and satin black on the grille.

Any thoughts?

Markiemark 01-14-2006 05:23 PM

Thoughts, not my style, I like the stock grill, is very similar to the bars grills on late forty chevy's, and that is the look I like.

For something different, it is kind of cool, would you have some mesh in the empty space, or just look at radiator??

SoCalHHR 01-14-2006 05:38 PM

There would be a black mesh behind the bars.
Going for more of a performance look.

I think it's kind of cool. It's way too open like that so the black mesh would be a good idea. It would be unique! :thumb: I wouldn't do it to mine of course now that I have the billet one. It kind of weird, I want to make my HHR dull and all of the accessories bright.

Erich from Darkside gave me the idea:

I'll definitely do mesh behind...if I go this route.

SIHHR 01-14-2006 05:55 PM

It would have to be thick mesh in order to block out the internal view of the raditor

SoCalHHR 01-14-2006 05:56 PM

Black mesh will block it just fine - you'd be surprised.

I like the bar that goes across each of the fog lights. I would buy that part of someone sold it

DJNateGnau 01-14-2006 05:57 PM

I like it, Looks good!

It does look good, Go for it SoCal! It will look better with some aluminum mesh. I don't know if your into Maltese Crosses but this mesh might look kind of cool behind it:

The bar on the bottom kind of looks like the one that goes from light to light on the SSR.

SIHHR 01-14-2006 08:13 PM

I know that but can that be ordered to fit the HHR

captain howdy 01-14-2006 08:16 PM

You mean the SSR bar? I wouldn't think so but the one there on the Darkside HHR looks easy enough to fabricate. It's just a bent brushed aluminum bar.

KNEZRYD 01-14-2006 08:19 PM

I say all black!

Chop two bars out of your grille, paint it black and there you go. That's how they did it and thats how you can do it. If someone actualy bought one rather than converting their own grille I would have to laugh. What a waste of money. And it was done for the Rides HHR build off not the SEMA show. Once again it is just the stock grille with two bars cut out and painted. You can do it yourself with a couple of free hours and some paint.

I'd like to see that. Take a good look at where the bars you will be cutting out "end" on the grille. Erich from Darkside (he did theirs), told me this was one big time-consuming ordeal. Lots of filler and sanding time involved. Looks easy - it's not!

captain howdy 02-06-2006 12:05 PM

It's still only a couple of hours worth of work including filling and sanding. The stock grille is soft as hell. It took about 5 seconds to chop through it. That is only a couple hours worth of work max. If I didn't promise the rest of my grille to someone and I was bored looking for something to do I would do it just to prove how easy it would be. The hardest part would be for the person to get over the fact that they are chopping up their factory grille, just like when I installed the Carriage Works grille.

I like the look :)
