Using spray paint for body parts.
In the near future I am considering buying a new hood, front bumper, and a rear bumper for my Chevy HHR. These parts have already been primered. I really don't want to take it to a body shop and pay alot of more money to have these parts painted. I want to paint them myself with spray paint. What is the best kind to buy, and what is the best way going about doing this. Can someone tell me the steps so I won't screw this up. Right now my HHR is daytona blue, but I wanted to paint the hood, front & rear bumper, and I foregot running boards a flat black with a clear coat finish.

You talking bout using 'rattle cans' for painting ???
I know at least 08 & newer is painted with water-bourne paint from factory. |
Dude, everyone knows a bodyman and most need work. Ask around, I'm sure there is someone around who will shoot it for damn near nothing.

Get it done right the first time at a body shop. It will cost you more if they have to fix any mistakes you might make.
|
Get a pro to do it. They have the proper materials, equipment and experience. You will get a proper finished product. The labour cost isnt that much.

Thank you for everyone's input so far. I will ask around for quotes on painting these parts I'm getting.

Paint
Just the base coat for my running boards was $90. then you have to have clear, thinner, primer, flex additive, etc. My friend did it just for the base coat paint cost, but he said that if he did them for anyone else, it would probably cost about $250 to get them done.

i agree look around..try kijiji.com in your area..dont just trust anybody..make sure they know what they are doin..check for a proper spray booth..rattle cans are fine for small spots but you will be very dissapointed with the results..paint is relitivly cheap..paint comes in grades..buy the low end single stage stuff..aviod duplicolor paint shop its crap..we gave up on laquer paints years ago..single stage comes pre mixed..no need for clear cote..just add reducer and hardner and spray..most paint suppliers have cans of paint they mixed wrong..off shades what have you..they normally will give you the paint for free if u buy the hardner and reducer..depends if u r picky about the color..maybe nows a chance for a two tone??rattle cans blow..dont do it...
