Custom install in the dash compartment maybe 🤔

Maybe someone has a unit with an auxiliary “heads up” display; you know, one that attaches to the dash and reflects off the windshield. A hard display at the driver’s eye level would be absurd. The driver is supposed to see the road, even in a newfangled “self-driving” car.

A Garmin mounted at the left corner of the dash works great.Had 1 in my Tacoma for years.I like the OP didn't want to have to look down at the screen and take my eyes off the road. The screen was only 5 inches and worked great for me.It certainly didn't block my view of the road.lol

Yes, closer to eye level, and forward, would be great. Never heard of a display like the Garmin one you describe for a radio, though. Have you? That would be especially nice with steering wheel radio buttons.

I saw an inexpensive heads-up displays that layed on the dash and reflect off the windshield, but it interfaced with the OBD-II, not the entertainment system.

The Garmin I was referring to is a stand alone unit that doesn't interface with the radio. Not sure if they make one that does.I know the newer ones can be purchased with voice activation making them safer then using a touch screen while driving.
