Question Basic Stereo System Questions

I have a 1LT HHR with the basic radio package and have a couple questions. I would like to upgrade my stereo system, but am going to wait until all the necessary harnesses and such are on the market. I really don't like the hardwire option and I don't really mind all the chimes. Anyway, here's what I need to know.

I can remove the speakers in the doors and put some better ones myself, right? What size speakers do I need and what would you guys recommend?

I would also like to put a speaker of some sort in the rear cargo area...it doesn't have one now. Is the wiring already back there or do I need to have it taken back there? What kind and size speaker do I need for there?

I don't spend alot of time in my car as is evidenced by the fact that I have almost 2000 miles on it and I've had it since 1/2/06. I have seen that many of you are quite knowledgeable in this area, so I value your expertise. I don't need to have something that will blow me out of the car...I'd just like to improve the sound a bit.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

6 1/2" speakers for the doors. By speaker in the cargo area do you mean a subwoofer?

I guess...I'm not real bright when it comes to this stuff...LOL But yes, I'm talking about the place on the left hand side in the cargo area behind the back seat. Thanks for quick response CH.

Yup that's the subwoofer. To my knowledge unless you have one from the factory the wiring is not there. But you can tap the wires and add one yourself.

if you wanted to add a little bass you could go with an Infinity Bass Link, they have an amp built in and a 10inch sub. It will add more than enough bass to the HHR and doesnt take up much room.

Thanks jaydogg...I just got back from talking to a guy from Car Toys and I'm still a little confused, but audio is not my forte. I told him about our great site and emailed him the info and he's going to stop by and check it out...says he loves place like this where people have so many great ideas on how to mod a new car. His concern was not doing anything that could possibly void my warranty, which I told him was one of my concerns. They are going to call a place where he believes he can get me a harness that will work, so we don't have to cut my factory wiring.

He did say I would be better off doing the whole thing at once, as I probably wouldn't appreciate just the speakers and subwoofer if I didn't put something besides a factory radio in it...and I'm sure he's right. I'll keep you guys posted on what's going on. Keep on posting suggestions...I'm open to all opinions.

I'm doing the whole thing at once. I already bought my rear door speakers and the fronts are in shipping. Once I have all the items...amps, head unit, sub, etc. I'll install everything at the same time.

It sure is hard looking at that brand new box of infinity speakers just sitting there in my computer room floor

I think it is 7 or 8" but I am sure if I guessed wrong someone will correct me.

As for doing it all at once, here is my plan but of course I will probally change them 50 times before starting
getting a new deck and door speakers first. Then if I want to later add an amp and sub in the back.
