Question Bluetooth car kit mute factory radio?

I want to install a Bluetooth hands free car kit in my 2006 1LT HHR.
A function of the car kit allows it to MUTE the car radio. It basically
provides GROUND to one of it's wires when you answer or make a call.

Does anyone know if the standard CD/MP3/AUX radio has a "mute wire"?

If all else fails, I plan on connecting the car kit's mute wire to a
12 volt relay that will simply turn the radio OFF and ON, as if I had
turned the car key off. But I was hoping I could just MUTE the radio,
as if the MUTE button was pressed on my newly added steering
wheel buttons!

Any assistance would be appreciated...
Thank you.

There is a mute function on the steering wheel radio controls.

nfboy, Thanks for reply.

I can press the MUTE button on the steering wheel control as you noted,
but I was wanting the Bluetooth Car Kit to automatically mute the radio
when I answer or place a call when I press the Bluetooth Car Kit button.

Any thoughts on how to "wire the car kit to the radio" to auto-mute the
radio?

Thanks.

Honestly I do not have a clue. I was responding really to whether the radio had a "mute wire" in your initial post. It must somewhere. I am sure someone here on the forum will have thoughts on this. This is a great source of info.

Oh and i forgot to say welcome...wow I beat Deb to it.

We have bluetooth kits for sale at $315. Suppose to work for all vechiles, factory and aftermarket headunits, and go through the speakers, haven't tested one out yet though. My cell phone isn't bluetooth . Let me know.

I didnt bother installing my bluetooth kit when I had my stock radio on. I would assume you can connect to the existing mute cable leading to the steering wheel. I did however installed my bluetooth kit after I installed my Pioneer HU (it had a mute cable option) and it works great.

HHR PNOY,
I don't think the cable going to the steering wheel buttons would work like a normal "mute wire connection". I need a wire from the radio, that if grounded, would mute the radio and display MUTE to the driver... Is there such a thing? Thanks.

I work in the mobile phone industry. There should be something connecting to your radio from the Bluetooth car kit. When you receive a phone call and answer it the B/T signal will have the kit cut out the radio. Check to see if the manufacturer has a manual online. Motorola has a manual for every product online. I don’t install car stereo components so I hope I was useful.

Im sure the mute button is either negative or positive switched. You could do a relay to switch it to what you need. I believe your looking for something like this. But ofcourse it does not work for HHRs.
