Hard wire a radar detector

I want to hard wire my radar detector does anyone know which wires to splice onto so that it is only on when the car is running?

It depends on how you want to wire it. If I was doing it I would first try the Floor Console Fuse Block, whic is located on the passenger's side of the console behind the forward pannel. While the car is off I would test either the stoplamp or wiper to see if it lights up for constant power. For ground I would drill a small screw to the side floor of the car. Thats what I would do when I installed Cell phone kits at verizon. There were issues going to the battery.

If my first idea does not work there is always the Engine Compartment fuse block. However i'm not sure if there is an gromet or opening to run a wire inside the car to get through. I have not looked into that yet.

Or you could just tap off of the cigarette lighter.

I was thinking about the cig lighter but it stays powered with out the key. I will check out the fuse box.

My next problem is I can't find a way to get the wire thru the firewall

I would not advise messing with the cig lighter. Thats why I suggested the passanger compartment fuse box.

It sound like you have never done any vehicle electical wiring. My advise is find someone you know that knows car electrical wiring and have them walk you through it or go to a professional and have them do it. There is too much that can go wrong with your electrical system if you screw up.

Take out your 2006 Owner Manual and look at page 5-83. It says its located on the passanger side of the console behind the forward panel.

Talking It's done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still need to take it on the road and find some traps. The install was pretty simple. It was a little scary drilling the dash!
