Grinding rear drum

Just did the rear brakes and drove my hhr to work this morning, one side is making a grinding noise while moving. Has anyone had this happen to their hhr, I'm thinking that I may have purchased a bad drum, I'm going to pull it apart tonight when I get home and try to figure out what's going on.

I don't remember anyone on the forum here having had that problem. Pulling it apart to check it out sounds like a plan to me. If one side is good though, pull it apart as well to make a comparison between the two.

Yes pull and inspect the grinding side and the other side for comparison.
Could be the drum or the shoes not seated correctly, look for grind marks on the drum that should point you in the right direction to fix it!

X3, and also the Adjuster could be snugged up too tightly on that side.

With the rear brakes adjusted properly, you should be able to turn the drums by hand, but there should be a "light drag" to them.

Too loose and the drum will spin freely like a pinwheel, too snug and you won't be able to turn it without a good heave, if it'll turn at all.

All brakes need to drag lightly, on discs it keeps the piston travel to a minimum so you have brakes "Right Now!". And on drums, the light drag keeps the drums dry on wet days and it limits the amount of piston travel in the wheel cylinders, so your brakes work right when you need them.

Our gray haired Members will probably remember four wheel drum brakes on rainy days, even properly adjusted ones needed to be warmed up by lengthening your braking application. Otherwise you'd find yourself sailing past a stop sign or red light, no matter how hard you hit the brakes.

My 69 Dodge Dart had 4 wheel drum brakes! 11 inch X 3 inch police set up from a wrecked Polaris adapted over without much fuss! Stopping was no problem! Until they faded after a couple of stops!

Cop brakes! That's cheatin' man!

Elwood Blues...It's got a cop motor, a four hundred and forty cubic inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters, so it'll run good on regular gas. What do you say? Is it the new Bluesmobile or what?

"Joliet" Jake Blues...Fix the cigarette lighter.
