HHR on Super Swampers

Well, not really, but that's what it sounds like

Got the car back from the shop after wifey's little curb incident. New wheel, same tire. Had the car aligned and all 4 wheels balanced. Drives great...however, starting at 25-30mph all the way up to 75ish, it sounds like i'm ridin on big knobby tires. Thought, well maybe it's the tires. Checked the pressure and they are all at 34psi, right where I like it. Got it home, jacked the car up and ran it up to 30mph while in the air. Still heard the sound...not the tires. Sooo, no broken suspension parts according to body shop and alignment, tires have been ruled out. Am I looking at a hub/bearing job? Would the force of sliding it into a curb, which chewed up the wheel pretty good, be cause enough to mess up the hub/bearing?

Found this thread and it sounds like i'm in for a hubber

What all is involved for a job like this? Any idea on how much parts would be, assuming this is the issue?

UMM, i dont know, could be the wheel bearing. Normally when a wheel bearing is going out they make kind of a growling noise(just from previous exp) and can cause vibration. Have you tried to grab ahold of the wheel and kinda pull in and out on it to see if there is alot of movement(grab at 12 and 6 and then 3 and 9 positions(like on a clock, lol) and kinda push/pull)? As far as price goes for one depends on if you have anti-lock brakes or not, autozone has the assembly with anti-lock for $180 and with out anti lock brakes $206 each. As far as changing them you pull off the wheel take off the nut for the axle shaft, remove caliper, rotor and there is 3 bolts that hold it into the spindle(not sure if it is pressed in the spindle or not though) and then reassamble.

I'd suspect the bearing straight off, the hit on that side would be more than enough to damage it. I'm surprised that they didn't replace it to begin with, if this was handled by an insurance claim I'd contact your agent. I believe that most insurance companies have policies in place to deal with damage that may have been missed on the initial estimate. If you paid for it out of your own pocket then you're probably on the hook for a bearing and labor unless you can prove the shop missed it, and its their mistake.

Out of pocket, no insurance claim. I'll try the wheel to see if it has any play in it and report back shortly...car needs to go in the garage anyway with White Death coming tonight :)

Well, the results are in...no discernible wheel travel at 3,9 or 12,6. However, give her the old Wheel of Fortune spin and you can clearly hear the clicking. !@*#%@

I lightly curbed my SS and had to replace the hub/bearing assembly. Just like yours, 25-70 or so I could hear a harmonic noise and feel it in the gas pedal. No play when trying to move the wheel with the car jacked up.

After researching so much about my issues on my Lumina, I would say from the sounds of it, it probably is the hub. The bearing could be, but I would guess the whole assembly, since you can typically tell easily if the bearing is bad, that would be a continuous grinding noise.

Smooth-

Bummer..

With modern bearings (term used loosely) they can't take the abuse the old dual Tapered Timkens could.

Since these are replaced as complete hubs, that may be where you are heading..
