We also have a 2011 HHR it recently started making noises in the rear now I'm thinking it's probably the same problem as our son's 07 HHR has.

 

Im about to attempt a spring replacement soon. I noticed the spring rubber on the top side had fallen down a ways when I put new shocks on awhile back. Is that the part listed above from Rock Auto--- a bumper stop? post #11 from OldBlue? thanks
