2010 HHR automatic Tranny problem
started hearing humming noise coming from rt. side front drive line!
checked it out and found play in in drive axle so replaced with new one and it did not fix the problem so after more checking I discovered the play is in the tranny side you can move it up and down so what can I do to fix this problem with out spending $$$ at the garage? Thanks.

Hub bearings are fine! what I'm saying is where the drive axle enters the tranny the whole assy moves around going into the tranny there must be abearing in the housing of the tranny or bushing going bad! I'm wondering if there is a how to tofix it!

That bushing is the only thing and it is basically just something for the rubber seal to ride on, it would leak. You had to remove the stub and replace it when you replaced the axle.
But, I still don't know how you came to diagnose a "humming" noise as the axle. Or how you determined the hub is "fine".
This is a list of symptoms for diagnosing a bad CV axle.

There is no play or noise in the hub assy. I replaced the drive axle thinking it was the problem.but it was not, so after more checking I found where the drive axle inters the transmisson into stub shaft you can move it up and down And back and forth to much play, don't know if there is bearing or bushing on the stub shaft gone bad. If so is there part# numbers for these?

Isnt it supposed to be able to move about, at least a little? I mean, if its a few inches then thats bad, but a few millimeters should be normal..... How much movement could you detect? Just thing; they have to be able to move as the wheel moves, if they were stiff they would surely break under the stress of movement over bumps and such!! Also, Axles dont hum, not that I've heard at least. I think axles are among the least common/rare failure points on these cars. Also, you could take a bad wheel bearing off and spin it in hand and it could feel smooth, but still be faulty at speed and under load.

it's more like a growling noise if any thing! I know its not the drive axle I replaced it! Its where drive axle slides into stub shaft it moves about a 1/4 of an inch in every direction! left side has no movement on the drivers side! with the wheels off the ground and the motor running in gear you can see the movement there it does not run tru like the left side! I guess I will keep driving it untill breaks down LOL!
