Angry HHR Making a New Noise

A week or so ago my 2008 HHR 2LT with Auto Trans 50,000 miles started making a noise. At low speeds up to about 30 mph it sounds like a pumping sound coming from the front right. As speed increases it gets louder and faster and sounds more like a humming noise. The engine seems to be running as it should, mileage is still good, it is just making this new noise. Anyone have any ideas about this?

Hub bearing, change them both! They tend to go south in pairs!

This thread has a how to......

Thanks for getting back to me. I suspected it was wheel bearings. I did some shopping online for the hub, the prices are all over the place. Ranging from $50-$60 for a pair to $250+ for one. Do you have any brand or price suggestions in the middle range for these things. Also how hard is it going to be to get that hub nut loose?

Just ensure you get the correct hub, ABS or no ABS. They all seem to last about the same.

I always figure if a $20 part doesn't last as long as a $100 part, I can afford 4 more parts.

Just a reminder on a few things (they are mentioned in the link Oldblue provided):

The hub nut should be replaced as it is a one-time-use item!
Torque values:
Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly Mounting Bolts - 85 lb ft
Wheel Drive Shaft Nut - 155 lb ft
wheel lug nuts - 100 ft lbs

I have been looking for a new Hub Nut online and getting confusing information on the socket size. The article mentioned in this thread says 29mm, the ones I am seeing online say they are 30mm and some other threads I have found say 35mm. I don't have a metric socket this size and need to buy one . What is it for a 2008 with ABS and rear drum brakes?

So I figured that since all the new hub nuts seem to be 30mm I bought a 30mm socket. I tried the fit on the one on my car and the 30mm is a little sloppy. I guess the one on the car, which is original, must be a 29mm. This kind of S... drives my crazy. I am pretty sure the bearing noise is coming from the front, but I can't tell for sure which side. I can't feel any play in either one and I can't get it spinning fast enough to make a sound. Is there any thing else I can try?

Just replace the two front hubs.
My original gland nuts where little loose, but the new ones where 30mm

Did you take the originals off with the 30mm?
