Traction control

I have a 2010 HHR with traction control, well today there was about 4 inches of snow and it would make a strange sound when the wheels slipped, then coming up my driveway it said low traction and the motor slowed up and once even stopped. I had to back down the driveway and took the traction control off and I was able to get in my driveway. Is it normal for these to slow down and even shut off? Thanks in advance, Jim

The purpose of traction control is to limit/stop wheelspin. In order to do this, when it senses one or more tires slipping, it reduces engine power. as far as the sound, can you be more descriptive as to what it sounded like?

It reminds me when the anti lock brakes make noise

also it shut off once when the traction control was on and the traction low light came on in the dashboard

Hmmm... I'm not completely familiar with how the HHR TCS systems work, but it may be that it applies the brakes to whichever wheel is slipping. personally, I'm with CJ, i always turn my TCS off, ESPECIALLY when it's raining or snowing.

I have had mine stall (5speed) because the engine retards and brakes cycle- likely what you're hearing when you said it sounds like ABS. I turn it off in snow so I can get some wheel spin to cut through the snow to pavement. Your ESC and ABS still work when TC is turned off.

Too funny,

Right now the side streets here have 2-3" or packed snow and ice on them.
Certainly not going to spin my tires to burn through that.

I find it works just fine on snow. IMO, If you need to spin your tires to drive in snow, you are doing it wrong.

Thank you...I was wondering about that also. But to be fair.....you know we have the most experienced, best trained drivers on any forum, right .

I drove on wet clay summer Saturday nights for 28 years, never needed ABS or TC, just a steady hand and right foot to power thru the corners sideways!!! gee I miss that!!

My first 20 years of driving were in rear wheel drive cars or pickups.

First car with it, I didn't like it much at first either. But I would much rather have TC and ABS now than not.

Also don't feel like I need to watch a black and white TV anymore either.
