trans axle output shaft seal replacement

Has anyone does replaced both trans axle output shaft seals?

I've been reading and the research says I have to remove the stub shaft, replace the sleeve along with the seal. Where is a good DYI section on this?

I have an 06 HHR 2.4L with 230k miles on it.

You don't mention if you have an automatic or not, I'll guess it's an auto.
This is one method.

I would use a seal puller and a seal driver to instal but this works

I'm merging the two threads as they really ask the same question, but pertain to the driveline section

It is an automatic. Everything I've been reading says you should replace both the sleeve and seal on the right side stub shaft. I was wondering if anyone has done it. Like the images show down

I wouldn't worry about the stub, that's not really a seal. I have replaced a few axles and never even considered changing the seals. I don't remember it looking like that. There is a stub on only one side, the right I think. When you pull the axle the stub should come with it. Unless we are talking about something different.

I decided to do a full front end suspension rebuild on my car cause it still had all the original parts. Yes it was a bit over due on the struts, sway, bar and tie rod. Since the car still had the original CV axles and wheel bearings, which weren't broke, but very well worn, I decided since i had everything torn apart to go ahead and replace the wheel bearing and hub along with the CV axle. My friend recommend to go ahead and replace the seals in the pictures that posted below, which are from my car.

Here is the right/passengers side on my car.

Here is the left/drivers side.

I'd just replace the seals! While you have it torn apart I'd replace the lower control arms, that'll give you new bushings and ball joints

They must have changed it. Or, my memory is worse than I thought. I've done a 2008 and a 2011, both had the splines & clips on the axle shaft, and one side needed a stub since the axles are the same, but the trans is shorter on one side.

Could be, I'm remembering wrong.

In the Chilton book, it talks about replacing the stub axle shaft sleeve on the stub. Has anyone done this before? It talks about removing the sleeve from the stub shaft and that it requires a special tool to do this.
