I've been running synthetic oil after the first "free" oil change at the dealership. When I took the car in for service, I'd bring a jug of Mobile 1 5w-30w and hope that they used it. Since changing the oil in the HHR is easy, I change it myself any more. I follow the DIC oil life monitor and change it when it gets to 20%. The last few times after several long road trips, I've had ~11000 miles on the oil before the DIC got to 20%.

Bought my 2010 HHR LT last week, join this forum today and learn a lot from from this forum already. I used to own 1993 chevy ASTRO Mini van, now new owner of used HHR, again thank every one here for all your post that make me know more about my HHR.

Using Oil other than what is recommended by GM in this engines is not recommended. Using a 15-40 weight or 5-40 weight is definitely out of scope of the recommendations.

The forum here cannot support someone's recommendations based on their out of scope experiments.
