Brand of fuel you use
I ran 76 brand gas at 87 octang for the first month I had my HHR. Moved to Shell 87 for the month of March and have seen a 2mpg increase overall. A few more pennies at the pump but giving it a try. I may get 5-6 tanks with the Shell ran through the HHR before giving Chevron a try. MPG went from 29.5 to 31.8 hwy reading after I switched to Shell gas. Any thoughts?

I am more superstitious about gas than anything...If my car runs good on 93 at a certain gas station, I go back there. sunoco super premium is what I get usually...I think all gas is gonna be the same, unless you get sediment in it(commonly known as a bad batch of gas) usually after the truck fills the big tanks up...
I wont buy reservation gas...Simply because my car misfired a bunch while I was on vacation in a state park, which is on a reservation....but that doesn't mean they are all bad...Like I said, superstitions play the biggest part...
Driving around to find the cheapest price, is USELESS... even if you know gas is $.02 cheaper, if you are driving farther than a few miles round trip, you are wasting time....
$4.00 per gallon @ 16 gallon fillup is $64.00
$3.98 per gallon @ 16 gallon fillup is $63.68
thats $.32 difference
If you get 30 mpg's, than it costs nearly $.13(@$4.00) to drive 1 mile. SO...if you drive 3 miles (round trip) farther than the gas station that is $.02 more, you are not saving anything, because it would cost you $.39 to save $.32.........
I argued with my grandparents about this, so I am glad I could get it off my chest....
I think I got off topic

Staying with the top tear gas stations is the way to go. As mentioned saving 2 or 3 cents isnt worth it... You are usually safe with name brand gas,and they do vary a bit.. I use Shell,Mobile,Gulf and Citco when I have to,,I also use IRVING that is a quality Gas Company from Canada and since Im not far from the border we have several stations here,, Ive been tryin 87/89 and 91 just to see the difference. so far not much,, But my MPG is getting better but up north we get a winter blend then a summer mix so it is probly being delivered now...

I run almost any type of gas. Sometimes Shell, sometimes BP, sometimes Sam's Club, Racetrac, Raceway, Sheetz, 7-11. It all depends where I'm at. I have the records of what station gas and mpg. I have never seen much difference with mpg vs brand or octane.

It's when they are out and about and go searching for the cheapest gas....they waste more time than anything.

Try Gasbuddy on your smartphone will let you know the least expensive gas in a 20 mile radius then no searching. I use unbranded gas mostly and get good mileage. Pricing is dependent on the loading rack price. Sometime the major oils will hold down the price of gas and unbranded is more expensive then but most of the time unbranded beats major oil pricing.
