Doing ok in my HHR so far
Doing ok in my HHR so far
After my first full fill-up session, after mixed driving, probably 75/25 highway/city, my DIC was reading 28.5, which was very pleasing to me, as the EPA rating for highway driving alone is 28. Then, when I did the figuring at the pump (I always double check car computers on important stuff), I was surprised to find myself doing a bit better than the car was telling me! Getting close to the 30mpg mark there!
So, after that fillup, we went to have tur-duck-hen with friends down in Clanton today, mostly highway (probably about 12% town driving)... a two hour round trip. The DIC is reading 31.7 as it sits in the garage. If the car is still reading lower than actual, I'll be mighty pleased indeed. The gas gauge is still well above the 3/4 level. Sooooo much easier on the pocketbook than the old Trailblazer.
Also, while I was driving about 60-65 most of the way, I didn't really do much out of the ordinary, beyond letting up near the hill crest and the like. I left the car in gear the whole time, too.

My DIC underestimates my mileage as well by about 1.5-2.0 mpg.
I have a Trailblazer too. In fact it's the SS model so I know about pain at the gas pump. Interestingly, the TB's DIC is almost always spot on mpg-wise.

I drive 100% in town during my work week so my DIC is always showing right about 23 mpg. But whenever I get on the freeway I like to reset it and then watch it bounce around as I go between road grades. The first time I did that I was seeing 35+ on the DIC but that was a almost all down hill drive with zero uphill sections. On normal freeways I see 32 average but I can see the number drop on hills and increase on the down side but it will always end up averaging that same 32 mpg over time. For me, this is a great improvement over my last vehicle. That vehicle was a 1993 Pathfinder 4x4 with 200K+ on it and it got around 12-18 depending on city/hwy. But again I drive like 98-99% city so I was getting killed at the pump. I guess I can be happy with my 23 mpg city.
Wait did you say the epa rating hwy is only 28???? I wonder what speed that is rated at? My 32 is at 75 mph as that is the max allowable limit here. I would have to be doing 90 or so constanlty to see 28 I would think.

it gets lots better when the cruise control is on. I noticed that I average around 38-42 on the freeway and when I have it set around town I get close to about 34 in the city. its frustrating watching everyone pass me when I'm doin the limit, but then I do my calculations after refilling and it makes me feel better.

Don't direct injected models like yours get better fuel economy already? I am thinking that is why you have so much higher MPG then our older models. On the freeway I use cruise but even when it is in town I shift at 2500 or less and creep up to full speed. It is just that there are too many stop lights on my path to work for me to stay at a constant rate of speed cause my city path is 55 MPH limit.
