Fuel range change decrease /increase

Hi, I have a issues with the fuel range in my HHR 2006, when I put gas the fuel range show the kilometers I can drive, but after a few minutes after the fuel range change for less/decrease the value, example from 240 km after a drive a few km decrease to 235 km just driver 4 km or less, or could be more example from 280 km to 271 km, I change the o-ring in the gas cap and clean the canistec evap yesterday I did that, but today still decrease the fuel range, is like the gas escape from the tank, so and I notice also from time to time the temperature from the thermostat is 0 degree or dash dash (- -) just I reset the computer code(even when don't show the light engine on) just reset and temperature back to 77 degree or 79 degree or even 80 degree, the maximum temperature that I see is until 81 degree after start go down to 79, 78, until 77 and keep in that value, so I would like to know if any relation between thermostat and gas consumption( bad fuel range).

so any help I will be happy.
Thanks

It changes dynamically; sit idling and watch it decrease, go down a hill watch it increase. The calculation is based on the amount of air flowing through the TB.

temp showing -- means you need a new t-stat.

Yes, as Donbrew explained, the fuel range can change quite a bit, if you have your foot into the throttle, or idling.

and the thermostat is toast, drain the coolant also, install an AC Delco 131-158 180 F and fresh 50/50 Dexcool

ok thanks you donbrew, just I need to replace the thermostat?

tomasorta 05-08-2021 04:29 PM

Thanks oldblue I will do that... Thanks

donbrew 05-08-2021 05:09 PM

Emphasis on ACDELCO 131-158 ONLY, don't get a "compatible" or what the parts guy says.

tomasorta 05-08-2021 06:28 PM

which are the best temperature for a thermostat? 77,78,79, 80?

Oldblue 05-08-2021 06:55 PM

AC Delco 131-158 is a 180 F thermostat so approximately 82 degrees C , time and time again members including myself have tried to save money and getting a Stant or MotoRad thermostat colder and hotter and found out the hard way, the HHR likes the correct thermostat.

Here is a how to about changing the thermostat

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-...l-p0128-24493/

and burp the coolant, air in the system is not a good thing!

for replacing the thermostat( that I know is toast, very often shutdown to dash dash - - , I got one AC Delco 131-158) the cooling have now is general 50/50 but the Chevrolet recommend dex-cool 50/50, so I need to flush the radiator because is different cooling, right?,
for flush the radiator just need destiller water put in the empty radiator, turn the car for 5 minutes and after turn off the car wait for 15 minutes and flush the destille water? until I see the flush water and cooling?, right. after replacing the thermostat and full the radiator with the new dex-cool?, right?.so pls let me know If I am in the right way to replace the thermostat and change the cooling from the general 50/50 to dex-cool 50/50?

thanks

Yes , your method to flush will work.

RJ_RS_SS_350 05-15-2021 09:32 AM

For a complete cooling system drain, there are 3 points.

1. Open petkawk at bottom passenger side of the radiator.
AND
2. Open thrmostat housing.
AND
3. Remove drain plug on bottom of the water pump.

Your distilled water flush would be best accomplished with no thermostat installed.

GM says "drinkable" water. Depends on which type and concentration of chlorine is in your water. Generally, chlorine and aluminium don't get along well.

Spellcheck flagged the Canadian spelling.

I flush already the radiator with destille water, now is keep cool, do I have to disconnect the battery before replacing the thermostat? or is not necessary?

Oldblue 05-15-2021 05:48 PM

Always a good idea when there’s wires in the way. But not really necessary

I change the thermostat for the AC Delco 131-158 and flush the radiator yesterday I finish,I put new coolant DEX-COOL, today was ok at the morning was ok on the highway, but afternoon when I finish my job and back to my home on the highway happens de same, the thermostat go down and show - - 0 grade celsius, with any code , just reset the code with Torque software and back to alive with current temperature 77 or 78, depending, so my question is if I change the DEX-COOL and change the thermostat, could be the cooling sensor temperature?, any suggestion pls. thanks

Did you burp the air out of the cooling system?

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-...-system-60614/

tomasorta 05-19-2021 08:41 PM

Thanks oldblue, yes I did yesterday afternoon and today morning, keep the car in my driveway with the front more high all night and and the morning I put more dex-cool and tun on the heating for about 5 minutes, and was ok because the temperature from myhome to my work was ok under 80 , keep in 79, 78, so I leave the car in the street park in my work and when I finish my job I drove back to my home, but for about 40 minutes after drive, I saw the temperature show 0(dash dash - -), when I reset start up until 93, I park in parking lot for pizza pizza and put more dex-cool and when back to my home I leave in my driveway and I did the same put more with heating on(for about 5 minutes), so just I burp two time only, and the procedure have to be more.., so tomorrow I will see what happens...

Oldblue 05-20-2021 06:24 AM

Sometimes you need to burp it 5 or 6 times

tomasorta 06-08-2021 07:29 PM

yes I did couple time and now is working properly, thanks oldblue

donbrew 06-08-2021 10:38 PM

Could be the ECT (temp sensor).

Oldblue 06-09-2021 07:18 AM

But it is working, properly now. Awesome!
