How much?

Here's a question I have after a night of idling in my car for a Security Gig that I did in MI.

I started the shift with just under 3/8 of a tank of fuel, and when I got home, I was down 1/4 tank(1/8 tank of fuel left)

My question is; What is the consumption rate for a 2.2L
What is the consumption rate for a 2.4L While idling.
What is the consumption rate for a 2.0L

I feel like 1/4 gallon of gas was a lot for a little 4banger.. But, I could be wrong. INPUT PLEASE!

That's a good question. I have no idea what the answer is.

Based on GM figures for their industrial engines....

5.3L V-8's (Gas) .75-.85 Gph at idle

4.3L V-6's .30-.35 Gph at idle.

2.5L 4's .20-.25 Gph at idle.

So burnng .25 gallons of fuel in a 2.2 at idle over a shift is about right, have to remember that idling engines get "Zero Mpg". If conditions and your duties allow it, shut her down as often as possible, restarting uses a fraction of the fuel used to idle.

And remember, excessive idling now puts you into the "Severe Service" maintenance schedule so you'll need more frequent oil changes to keep your engine healthy.

So 1/4 tank over a night is about right?

I know I am about due for an oil change within the next 1,000 miles. Since I got home from travelling for work, my HHR has sat a lot, and my oil life is still around ~60%. That being said, when I get the chance, Mobil 1 High Mileage synth is what I am thinking to go with.

I see what you did there Oldblue

.25 GPH through constant idling of 8hrs puts you at 2 gallons of gas used

If your car has a 16 gallon tank, 1/8 of that is... 2 gallons.

I would only add that running the fuel level that low is not a good practice..

LawDog88 08-02-2014 11:46 AM

Ah, sleeper. Did you take an extra long nap, and find this thread a little late?
