INST gear vs. Cruise Control MPG efficiency

INST gear vs. Cruise Control MPG efficiency
I just bought a used 2010 HHR LT w/just under 40k, I've been having some MPG & oil life issues (see my other post in the "general discussion>problems/service issues" for details) so I read up on the INST gear in the manual and it seems to me that Chevy recommends to ALWAYS drive in INST for the best MPG. I tried it out today and while in INST it makes less shifts but the RPMs run high, doesn't that DECREASE fuel efficiency?
Also, anyone have an opinion/experience about INST vs. cruise for highway driving? Which is better?
Another, unrelated question: reset my DIC and oil life went to 100%, which isn't right, will it right itself eventually or do I need to log my miles so I change the oil in the 5k miles range?
I apologize if I ask seemingly dumb questions, but I'm brand new to Chevy (well, brand new to American cars in general) so I'm trying to learn as quickly as possible about all the differences in what seems to most of you like "everyday" obvious stuff. Only 2 months experience with it! Thanks for your patience and any advice/suggestions are greatly appreciated!!
