K&N FIPK vs Stock Airbox Mileage

Hello - first post to the HHR network, althought I do tend to read from time to time.

I picked up a 2006 base HHR (manual trans, steel wheels, 2.2L etc) in February 2009. After quickly realizing how easy it was to get 30+ mpg by driving smart, I wanted to see if any modifications would actually help.

Here is my first gas mileage product test: K&N FIPK vs stock airbox.

Stock airbox data is from 3/14/2009 - 3/4/2010
K&N data is from 4/1/2010 - 12/2/2010

Over this time, my driving routine was mostly the same. I did remove long trips or unusual behavior that might skew the results.

The minitab results show there is barely no statisticaly difference between the K&N and stock airbox, even though the stock airbox averaged 0.8mpg better over that time span. Minitab direct info:

Two-Sample T-Test and CI: K&N, Stock
Two-sample T for K&N vs Stock

Intake / N / Mean / StDev
K&N / 17 / 31.80 / 1.32
Stock / 21 / 32.60 / 1.43

Difference = mu (K&N) - mu (Stock)
Estimate for difference: -0.805
95% CI for difference: (-1.711, 0.101)
T-Test of difference = 0 (vs not =): T-Value = -1.80 P-Value = 0.080 DF = 35

Anyway - I hope this helps someone out there. Really, there is no substitute for good driving. Still, it is interesting to play around.

My next test: Swapping tires from the OE Firestone Affinity Touring (at 22lbs) to Bridgestone Turanza Serenity (at 26lbs).

Guess what?? You're realizing a scientific fact that may here don't have a clue about! :thumb:

During normal cruize conditions, there is ONLY one "restriction" in the intake system.....

THE THROTTLE!! :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Forget all the -Blah Blah Blah, Blah Blah Blah , Blah Blah stuff.

EVEN IF, you Got a 9HP gain as they claim, your Not gonna really tell one way or the other.

Unless you pay to have your HHR Dynoed Before and then again After you Install it.

Do a Search this has been discussed Plenty of times on here.

It does SOUND a little better when you first get on it, but that is only noticable for about the first week after you install it.

By then you are just used to it as normal .

Changing driving habits plays more into your gas milage. IMO.

But for me, I just Drive, a few MPG's either way don't bother me.

When I drive it, I drive to ENJOY the ride. I like when someone asks me about it, most have NO clue wtf a Panel is and ask me if I custom made it like that! LOL

I say No, CHEVY DID. I just added my own touches to it to make it Mine.
