5-speed from Cobalt XFE in HHR?
Would there be any benefit in swapping the standard 5-speed for the special 5-speed that came in the XFE Cobalt?
They had a 3.63 gear ratio instead of the HHR's stock 4.17 (or 3.95 in 2009-11 models).
My goal would be improved fuel economy.
The transmissions are available locally for less than $200.

Looks like it would bolt on to a 2.2L. From my reading it is 3.63 is 2009-. Evidently the ECM tuning changed to standard equipment in 2009 (VVT), so the only difference is the trans.
So, yes you would gain about 1 MPG city 3 MPG highway. I don't think you would be able to use 5th in the city.

I would also want to know what the ratio is in each gear, compared to stock, before I made that decision.

The final drive ratio is the only thing that changes. All versions have the same specific gear ratios and spacing.
I need to correct the original post as the F23 5-speed in the 2006-08 HHR actually has a gear ratio of: 4.17 and the 2009-11 was changed to 3.95.
The standard ratio in the Cobalt was 3.84 and the XFE had 3.63.

depends on how long you plan on keeping the HHR
if you plan on keeping it long term, then it would pay for itself in a couple years. but outside of that I dont see it worth it time and $$.
but it is something to consider for someone like myself, who plans on keeping my HHR and passing it along to my son. Im pretty happy with the mpg I get now, or I should say Im surprised, as I see a solid 31-33 avg at highways speeds of 70mph with no traffic and no wind. if I get behind someone, Ive seen it go as high as 45mpg (scangauge verified) so a solid 2-3mpg gain on the highway would be worth it to me, especially since 90% of my driving is highway. :)
