Does anyone make one these that is metal?

 

Yes, it's called a door check.

 

Do you have to take the door apart to change it like it looks like?

 

Is the OEM one plastic or just has plastic coating on it?

 

Yes you have to remove the door panel and reach in to remove it, then reach back in to install the new part, the new parts are plastic. Haven’t ever seen a metal one. I suppose you could fabricate one out of either a metal strap or if you’re real handy cut a piece of metal to size and shape. I have simply removed any I have found in the parts yards that the door panel was missing.

 

I think I have seen a metal one for a different vehicle. Don't know anything more.
