2.2 or 2.4L and a few other questions.

Hey Guys!

I'm thinking about buying an HHR I'm leaning towards the 2.4L even though they are a bit harder to find are there any pros and cons with the 2.4L, it looks to be about 30HP and the fuel economy is about the same.

I currently have 2007 Avalon with 100k miles that I really like but I'm a bit bored with it and the HHR is so ugly that it's retro cool, it's so reasonably priced it seems hard to beat.

How is the road noise inside these cars?

Are there any years to avoid and are the newer ones much better than the 1st few years built?

Does the stock stereo system have an input jack, play mp3's and/or is the stock stereo easy to remove?

I apologies I'm sure these questions have been asked multiple times but I searched and didn't find any threads comparing the 2.2 & 2.4L.

2.2 or 2.4

Hey Arizona. I just bought an 07 2.4. I like the power it has especially from 0 to 30 but I dont know how it compares to the 2.2. I don't hear much road noise at all. I picked it up last Thursday from a private seller who kept up the maintenance. It does have 159k miles but the owner changed oil regularly. He also has already replaced the shocks and struts, cv joints, control arms and ball joints. Those are suspensions pieces that tend to wear out somewhere past 100k miles

I have owned 10 HHR's and have concluded that as far as model years go there are the good and bad with different years but I have tended to stick with the 2011 which I have now.

Why not if you can find a good one. They have all the latest upgrades.

If you want the 2.4L then you will have more choices to look for the "2LT" model as it was standard with the 2.4L motor.

I like the 2.4L.
It idles soft and quiet unless there are some mechanical issues.
Just a tad more noise when you Tromp on it.
Mileage is more about how it is driven then which engine.
You can use Higher octane fuel in the 2.4L .... 91-93..... but for normal driving it will run just fine on 87 octane.

Starting in 2011 GM requires Dexos 5/30W oil.

I find that Regular Mobil 1 ... 5/30W works best for me and it is Dexos approved.

You would be lucky if you find a fairly local one in your location as Rust will be an issue if it has been driven in many northern and eastern states.
Look carefully underneath and in the engine compartment for corrosion.

Good Luck Shopping.

2.4L...

Oldblue 06-03-2018 09:05 PM

Oldblue scoots along nicely, it can out run its shadow on a cloudy day, 2.2 automatic, 2007 LS with 268,000 miles on it.

2.2

I dont think theirs much difference between the two motors. Question OldBlue: Do you change the auto transmission fluid and if so how often and do you change oil based on the oil life indicator? Thanks

Oldblue 06-04-2018 07:37 AM

I change engine oil at 20% on the oil life , I change the automatic transmission oil and filter every 250,000 klms , I change the Dexcool every 5 years.

Thanks Oldblue

I appreciate the info from someone whose HHR has performed for a lot of miles.

Great information guys thank you! Very impressive Oldblue, besides the front end any areas that are prone to failure?

Silverfox 10 HHR's any story behind that? Do all 2LT's come with the 2.4L?

This site has been around since 2005, just about anything you need to know about the HHR can be found here. Please feel free to explore the site. You can't break anything by looking around. The desktop site is easier than the mobile site, scroll all the way down and choose view full site.
