Just another perspective, based upon personal experience. An automatic transmission is more expensive to rebuild or replace than a clutch.

I've owned and still own both and have done more of the former than the latter.

Then again, I get 60k to 90k miles on my brakes and my Suzuki Samurai is going on 23 years (orig owner) with the original clutch, so maybe it's my driving habits. But did replace the rear brake shoes on the Samurai, not from wear, but because the linings delaminated and fell off from the backing due to age.

It struck me that the cost for the auto option is a little high for a relatively inexpensive car (yes, I know there are things other than just the trans on that cost), plus I got a significantly higher discount on a manual, since it had been sitting on the lot for a while. You've gotta enjoy driving a stick though to choose one, and this isn't a particularly nice arrangement to use, but a shortened lever helped a little. Since my other car is also a manual trans I'm kinda used to the shifting habit. I just wish they'd put the reverse in the same place on both though...

Ive always thought the auto option was a scam, its just a way to make more money. 90% of the people out there drive autos only and thats how the cars are equipped. Next they will try charging for rubber on the brake petals.
