2017 Tire Recommendation

The tire recommendation threads that I am finding are old. Tire availability changes, and so are preferences for now older vehicles.

Looking for a tire recommendation for the 17" wheel. My personal needs are:
  1. Great in rain
  2. Lasts lots of miles
  3. Quiet
Less important:
  1. Handling on curving roads (there aren't any here)
  2. Snow conditions (none here)
  3. Appearance (really, I do not care)
Obviously, there is a big difference between the $450 set and the $800 set, but I was seeing some decent Goodyear Sets for $625 and that price range seems reasonable.

Open to ideas! Please share your thoughts!

"Michelin" is kinda broad. I realize the model of the tire performs significantly different for a 55 vs a 75 wall for example. Could you be a little more specific on the recommendation?

hwmonkey, you might be best to just go to one of your local tire stores and speak to one of their sales people.

Or do what many do, go to one of the online tire sales sites such as https://www.tirerack.com/content/tir...170418002937:s and spend some time going through their reviews. Yeah that takes a lot of time, and one has to discard the garbage reviews, but at least it can help narrow down the choices. Then take those choices to your tire shop and discuss with them.

Yeah, Whopper, that was what I was trying to avoid. Unfortunately, I have worked intimately with the corporate offices of multiple tire retailers. There are two sad truths about local store operations:
  1. spiffs: the clerk is incentivized by store revenues and current promotions. The tires they direct you to are more about their take home pay than your vehicle. Once month they will tell you a certain tire is the best and the next it is a different time.
  2. They speak in generalities and not to the vehicle. How the tire grabs in wet conditions with a 215 50 17 on an HHR is not the same as the same model in a 215 75 17 on a taller, heavier vehicle.
I know, asking opinions here will likely only give a comparison of one or two tires a person has experienced on their HHR. One thing is clear, the OEM Firestone Affinity tires were crap on these cars. I just figured that most people here have opinions about everything on their HHR; I did not expect no one to have an opinion.

My current tires are Capitol Sport UHP. I definitely got 50K out of them, and they probably were on the road for 60K. They are fairly low cost and perform well at 80 MPH daily. But in the rain, they have never done well.

Just ordered on Goodyear.com to be installed at a local Goodyear shop for $620 after taxes and fees (and after a rebate on a new Goodyear credit card with 6 months to pay for it). That fits the budget given the recommendations from other HHR owners and 75,000 mile warranty.

Thanks for the tip.

:) - there ya go - you hated them, and I loved the Firestone Affinity tires. They were great in the rain (and we get a lot of it), lasted almost forever, and were nice and quiet. I ran them as summer tires and finally wore them out after 8 years, and probably put 120,000 km on them. Performance tires they were not, but as everyday tires I was quite happy with them.

good luck on your search
