Alarm system.. sort of...
OK, so apparently someone in the household is unable to hit the door lock button on the key fob after parking outside my house (on the street) and the local hooligans open the door, ransack the glove box and dump the contents on the floor, or seats. This has happened a number of times weekly.
Police say "lock the doors" (duh!!) I am thinking since they seem to target the glove box, I should tie into the box light so when it gets opened, with the ignition off, it will honk the horn until it is closed, or for a certain length of time. Maybe that will scare the crap out of the creeps.
I hesitate putting an alarm on that automatically sets after the car is off for a length of time as the drivers here will forget to turn it off when getting in the car to drive, and I will hear about it to no end. Having the doors lock automatically will most likely lock the keys inside so that is not a good idea either. Any thoughts? No driveway or garage so that's out too.

Ok... when the wife or kid drive it, I can't be around all the time to verify it was locked when they return home. Especially if I am not there.
Keys are not left in the car, nothing of value in the car except for receipts from repairs or purchased parts, etc.
I figured by tying into the glove box light, and using the ignition as a disable to bypass when the car is running, it would effectively arm the system when there is no driver in the car. Sort of a passive alarm system so the key has to be off for the alarm to go off.
They never touch anything in the back seat, like my OBDII scanner, or other personal items, I guess they are looking for cash (??)
I would prefer the other drivers would take the few seconds to lock the doors but what can you do ??

The only way to arm the stock content theft deterrent system is by locking WITH THE FOB.
Test your fob; does it reach the car from inside the house? If it does lock it every night from inside. The range is probably 100 feet, or so.

I agree.... but this would be an additional auxiliary alarm system with nothing to do with the stock system. so far I am thinking a 10 min total alarm triggered time, and either a pulsed horn output, or use this annoying 135 decibel piezzo alarm noise maker that is sitting next to my desk... After making noise for 10 min, or when the box is closed, it will reset. If the car is running, the alarm will be disabled. That should put some starch in their shorts!!
I don't know if the glove box light works with key off.
However, it would be incredibly easy to rig an alarm using a esp8266 and a sensor of some type. I could make one for about $4.00. Sensor could be a mercury switch, a infra red presence detector, or any other you might want. I have 5 of them sitting around my house to tell me when the garage doors are ope/closed, if somebody is in my garage and when my mail gets delivered. Mine work on Li-ion batteries but it would be easy to wire into the car battery.

for doors and back yard to keep an eye on the Land Rover and shed, I used cameras I got from Walmart, work in dark and networked thru wifi so they give me a signal when there is movement. The HHR is parked across the street so there isn't power over there
Glove box light works on inside lights circuit so there is power there all the time, grounded when it is opened or I can add a pin switch actuated by the door. (a few of those laying around) I could always run it through an Arduino if I need to...
