Question Balance shaft discussion

I don’t believe that the balance shafts are removed, but a smooth shaft is installed to replace it and the sprocket is still used to drive the water pump chain

They do It both ways. The more effective technique is to removing the extraneous rotating mass completely along with a bit of chain inertia, but it's more work.

So if they remove the shafts, how is the water pump driven?

A (shorter?) chain drives the water pump, different guides, no more balance sprockets? Maybe a guide sprocket? I've seen pics, but didn't study it. Possibly more than one arrangement

I’m not seeing a plausible route for a shorter chain.
