Everyone loves to hate and complain about being screwed by oil companies but noone wants to cut back, or dare I say give up, their oil usage.

Oil is probably the most inelastic commodity on earth. With that come huge price shocks. Also, the majority of the worlds oil stocks are in the hands of a few large corporations. I see nothing wrong with what these corporations are doing. They have realized that they own such a commodity and that people are not will to be without it and hence they are "laughing all the way to the banks."

Complaining will do no good. Reducing usage will send a message to the large corporations. Until a reduction happens the guys are going to keep cashing in.

I work in the oil and gas industry as a geologist and there are so many factors that drive up the price. One of the most important factors right now is that it makes a lot more sense to leave the oil or gas in the ground and not produce it because you can get a higher price in a few weeks or months. A project I was working on found a new gas pool. A decision was made to leave the gas in place until the winter because gas prices with be able double what they are now. This isn't an unfair practice, it's cashing in at the right time.
So let me get this right...

You are telling a bunch of people that drive one of the most fuel efficient cars on the road, that we have done nothing to cut back...?? I personally just sold a truck that got 8 mpg hiway or city, up hill or down. And bought an HHR, 23 to 28 mpg. As a Nation, yes, Americans need to cut back on their oil usage, but it sounds like you are pointing that finger at the wrong peeps...!! Hey, we all have the right to complain about it... We fought for that right, several times..!!

I agree. Oil companies have us by the balls because we all need fuel. There is no way to feasibly cut back our dependence on oil. (Please don't bring Brazil into this ) How would you suggest it being done? Stop driving or heating your home? Alternative energy is a joke at this point.

Like many others, I bought the HHR for the better fuel economy. It's one thing to buy a car that is better on gas than a guzzling truck but it's another thing to use it excessively. I, like many others, live in a planned community. I also live in the North where winters are cold. I know people need to use cars to get to work and buy groceries and stuff but what bothers me is when my neighbours hop in their cars to drive half a block to pick up their mail from the central, communal mailbox area. I don't care if you drive the most fuel efficient vehicle on earth, walk your lazy ass to the mailbox.
I also had a neighbour who used to heat up his vehicle in the mornings during the winter. I would hop in the shower and see his truck in the driveway warming up. I would get out of the shower and leave the house a half hour later and the truck was still warming up. This was a brand new vehicle and didn't even need to be heated up. These are just a few examples of obvious wastage. I'm not saying everyone is like that because some people do take a position to try to conserve.

I guess what I am trying to get at is that every little bit that one can do to use less energy is good but always know that there is more that can be done.
