Can't start. Changed the battery - some clicking and whistle - what could be?
Came home. Shut off the engine - after 10 minutes wanted to drive to a store and it couldn't start.
Bought a new battery, used jump starter - nothing. Replaced relay - nothing - just some clicking and noise(like a whistle) on the trunk and under the hood. And some clicking under the hood. Now will try to remove the starter and inspect it. How to check it - just put 12V and see what going to happen? I'm afraid something serious(like valves) - but drove home without any problems... Some advice? What can I check? Will clean contacts next to fuses box - but it shouldn't clicking and make some noise if the contacts are bad - right? |
Which lug did you connect to to jump start it! That rear lug on the left side of the fuse box under the hood is for the EPS , so inspect the fuse panel and relays |
what do u mean - could u explain, please? I connected right to the main battery terminals. But now I took out the starter, tried to connect 12V and it doesn't spin.
|
Take it to your local parts palace, they can bench test it. sometimes people use the wrong lug to put the jumper cables https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...4ec4e9e49.jpeg Under here at the fuse box https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c50bf2346.jpeg Not this rear lug by the master cylinder https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a762df427.jpeg Just pop the cover and check to ensure these two cables are secure |
Just checked the starter - looks like solenoidmakes that whistle noise - what it could be?
May I disassemble it and see some broken part inside - like ball bearing or something? Is it possible to replace just the solenoid? Before I cleaned all those connectors that u showed on the pictures. But it's obviously starter... |
Then simply buy a new or rebuilt starter, if you order from RockAuto, we have a discount code. |
Applying 12V to the starter does not prove anything. That big red wire is 12V already. Applying 12V to the small terminal on the solenoid should make a click and turn the motor. If it does not you may replace the starter-solenoid assembly.
If it is not obvious you can just place a jumper between the 2 posts. The B+ is hot at all times (be careful). The S is a 12V signal from the computer to activate the solenoid. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3f1f77270f.jpg |
Just finished to disassemble - inside was a lot of grease and part of ring that holds brushes on the starter's back lid was brocken and coper wires was deattached. Thath's the main reason.
How does the grease(oil+dust?) went inside the starter??? Could I bought somewhere just the back lid with brushes? Or better to buy whole used starter(anyway - wil not know the condition inside). http://i.piccy.info/i9/3b85b8a6e9535...01/111_800.jpg http://i.piccy.info/a3/2018-12-14-22...01x609-r/i.gif Is the starter the same in all the models(mean the years)? |
Tell your parts counter guy, what year and engine size you have. dont mess around with a used possibly just as bad as this, they are not that expensive under $150.00 https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...ter+motor,4152 |
On eBay they start new at $31.00 free shipping. Used start at $28.00.
The oil/grease is probably from a leaking oil pressure switch or a long list of slpoppy oil changes. |
fly wheel looks dry, can't figure out from where too much grease inside...
So does it mean each year and even engine have their own starter model??? I thought it should be the same - isn't it? |

They probably are the same. Why not get a new/rebuilt one from a store that can tell? On eBay you only save $3 used.
|
If it is leaking change it about $10, just above the starter.
|
on eBay the new starter is $31, on a junk yard next to me is $27 but not the same year - nobody knows will it fit or won't. Brushes on eBay is $15.
Refurbished starter next to me is $60 smth. Probably will take off on the junk yard. I hope it should be the same. |
Jay23 quote: "I'm a heavy duty diesel truck tech. Have some experience, also fixing my motorcycles since 10 y.o."
Really not getting all these basic mechanical questions from a guy whose supposed to be mechanic. |
It means I used 2 stroke motocross motorcycles with no starters. Was working with trucks as an entry level tech. I didn't tell I'm extra class mechanic - right?
|
OK, yes the starters will fit from year to year, however there might be slight differences. try the $27.00 one , if that works, great! Money saved. about the oil sending unit https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-...ng-unit-57962/ |
Used motors are used. Your old one was used. See anything in common?
Changing brushes went out in 1960, this is the 21st century. |
the reason - I cleaned whole starter and at the end started to clean that lid with brushes - to replace new brushes now for me - just 1 minute(just 2 small bolts).
I believe almost all those refurbished starters have replaced brushes. But probably nobody will sell just the brushes. |
No, I’ve not seen replacement brushes in years. But doggone it EBay has tgem https://www.ebay.com/b/Starter-Parts...700/bn_1350234 |
Have fun.

Anything with electric I would replace new if your holding on the car for awhile because why would you want to do the job twice ? Specially alternator and batteries and be done with it .. |

replaced the starter yesterday. Pull it out from 2011 HHR. There are a little different connectors, but I did it. So better to use from 2007 if u can find it.
|
