Like the PT Cruiser, I believe it gets classified as a truck by the manufacturer which helps GM or Chrysler showing improved fleet gas mileage with their truck line. I'd say its an SUV without the SUV suspension, so I look it to be an economy station wagon. At least that was why I bought the HHR, good cargo capacity and good milage.
I sort of think of a SUV that has some off the road capabilities and personally I wouldn't try my HHR on any off the road trails.

It's a wagon. Which is a car. GM may list it as a truck but that's just to monkey with the CAFE numbers.
I also agree with the whole "unnecessary waste of a SUV" statement. The vast majority of SUV's never see so much as a dirt road. And to make matters worse, the whole 4WD thing is so overhyped that many people think that it makes them invincible. It always amazes me how when the snows hit up here how many SUV's I see stuck in the ditch or worse, upside down in the ditch, on HWY 83 between Minot and the base. They always outnumber any other type of stuck vehicle by at least 2 to 1.
But, if it makes you feel better to call it a truck,SUV,crossover, whatever, don't let me stop you. Denial is a wonderful thing.

It's a compact Crossover SUV, which, IMO, is the modern day Station Wagon. You just can't be cool in a wagon....
GM put's it in the truck catagory just to raise their CAFE numbers as others have already stated. We all know, it's not a truck. It even has less ground clearance than my wifes MPV.
So, you are driving a station wagon. If you can't handle that, tough.....

The paper work from the dealer when I bought it (Jan 12th,08) says TRUCK. My registration says PASSENGER which mean I no longer have to Pay about $55 a year for truck plates when I had pickup trucks. Now it will be around $40 a yr, so that makes me happy

My insurance carrier (Farmers) calls it a sports wagon. In Texas it doesn't matter if it's a truck or a car the license tag is right under $70.00 for either one. I think the statement of GM calling it an SUV for the fuel ratings is close to correct, although I have no problem with a car being an SUV. Nothing in SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) states truck. So for me its a car.

I think Chevrolet marketing was wise to bring out the HHR and not produce a Cobalt wagon. Pontiac has the Vibe, but it's more like a "sport wagon".
Ford has a Focus wagon, yet Chrysler has only the Caliber.
