Was considering the HHR, couldn't pull the trigger! It's killing me....
I rented mine from Avis as well. It was $37/day thru the week and $27 a day if you kept it 2 days and through a Saturday. This was with a Costco discount. Meaning you just tell them you have a costco card - my place never even checked ( I have one, but still).
I called ahead to find rates, but when I rented I just showed up, no reservation.
tonepad: Thanks for the feedback. I felt the same way about the car too. I loved driving in it, had plenty of headroom. Shouldroom was tight but okay. It's just the laundry list of complaints that I think everyone has with the HHR to some degree that's holding me back.
I'm really sold on the car though, love the looks, love the driving experience, love the lower payments and better gas mileage. At this point though I think I'm convinced to just wait it out a little more till at least 2008 model information is released. Even if there are some slight improvements to the interior, it would be very welcomed in my eyes.

Again it probably has to do with my comfort factor re. 4 cylinder engines. Anyway I just bought the Premiere edition today and there's no turnin' back. I do think the model will improve a bit over it's life but again a point of reference is important with the more unique styling cues that designers use. Another example are the window switch placement...I think they were intended to mimic the 50's and 60's Custom cars which never had electric windows to begin with therefore the "modders" of the day would add the switching system to the one area they had to play with...the console and or the Dash area. Now I've never owned a real vintage Custom Rod but i did own a 1984 Alfa Romeo GTV6 which had the window switches at the shifter area...so again a point of reference that I can relate to in a personal way. If you've never had either of these experiences it may be just too weird. Bottom line for me is it is not a deal breaker since I'll adapt like I did to the GTV6 beast. The armrests that everyone seems to mention are not unique to this vehicle...I think my 2 Mitsu Monteros had fold down armrests, but it could have been another machine. I do prefer a console box with a hinged lid type deal...I have that on the wife's Subi and my son's Jeep Grand, but didn't have anything on the SVT Focus so again not a deal breaker just an adjustment. If you get a chance to see a Premiere edition do so it's really amazingly put together for a $20k car...it's luxury to this old Dawg, at the end of the day it's got a ton of stuff that I haven't been able to touch for under $26k + out the door, if even!!

The Corvette and the Camaro has the window switches on the center console, but the consoles are at arm/elbow height in those cars. I too think a console would be a good upgrade to the HHR. A raised box with lid as a rest for your arm if you don't like the arm rest on the seats. The shifter and brake handle would have to be raised also, I see possibilities there. I posted in your other post on cangrats on your Cappacino HHR. And again have fun. Nice ride, there are 2 at a local dealer here, they are nice. The little 4 cylinder will grow on you, and does a better than I thought job.
HA!!! LOL...now that GTV6 was a beeyatch, and the ONLY thing similar to the HHR was the window switch placemnt though, but I'm just trying to make a bit of a historical point of reference. The Alfa motor was a nice mill though, super in the low end...ie. torque and very smooth in its' power delivery...it was actually a Hemi V6. It handled like crap though. Boy have we come a long way in car design/engineering since then. The HHR is SO refined in comparison to then or even many others on the road today. BTW since my wife is European I do get over to the EU and it is great to see Alfa's over there. They seem to be alive and well but just not for American tastes or needs. They can still be great looking cars at the top of the line.

So was our Crossfire. Didn't even think about it but I guess it was because they were easy to reach with the console being higher and the seat sitting lower. Also the locks were in the same location so you weren't always switching back and forth from door to center trying to remember which location had which switch.
