disable alarm system

Call me stupid, odd, etc. but I don't like to carry the remote in my pocket.
Is there a way to disable the alarm system. I would like to use the power door lock button on the door and not have the alarm system armed.
IS THIS POSSIBLE????
Thanks

To not have the alarm go off, you have to use the key to lock the door. Locking the door with the door lock button arms the alarm also.

I just got a new 2008 HHR 2LT last week and noticed the following:
The HHR manual (page 2-18) states the door lock button arms the alarm... but test it! I have found ONLY pressing the lock button on the remote will actually arm the alarm. (I verified this on my 2008 2LT, and 4 other new HHR's on the car lot). The Chevrolet service department is checking with GM on a solution. Their technical documents do NOT include door lock button as a way to arm the alarm, only the lock button on the remote.

Test your HHR to see if DOOR LOCK BUTTON sets alarm:
1) lower driver door window
2) open driver door and press the door lock button (to lock doors)
3) close the driver door
4) wait 5 seconds (if lock delay), then another 30 seconds for alarm to arm itself
5) reach in and pull up on the door lock post/pin to manually unlock driver door
6) pull door handle to open driver door
DOES YOUR ALARM GO OFF? (or 10 second pre-alarm go off?)

Now verify alarm is set using REMOTE's LOCK BUTTON:
1) lower driver door window
2) open driver door, then close driver door
3) press lock button on your remote (to lock doors)
4) wait 30 seconds for alarm to arm itself
5) reach in and pull up on the door lock post/pin to manually unlock driver door
6) pull door handle to open driver door
YOUR ALARM WILL GO OFF! (or 10 second pre-alarm go off)

Also note: the alarm light does not come on and/or flash when I use the door lock button, ONLY if I use the remote's lock button.

My 2006 sets the alarm both ways. Either by the FOB, or by the button on the door. Alarm light on the also dash lights either way.

Yes, I traded in a 2006 HHR 1LT and I thought it worked both ways... (don't have HHR any more to test)
BUT, has the 2008 HHR's been changed... Would other's test this on 2008 models?

Far left side of instrument cluster. When you lock the doors with the key out of the ignition, it will come on. When it goes out the vehicle alarm is armed.
