extended warranty
 
I received a packet offering an extended warranty from GMPP. With my current mileage the cost for a 36/54000 Major Guard coverage is $1380. I am thinking about doing this, but is that additional coverage extended past the factory 36/36000? Making it a 72/90000 warranty? I don't read that anyplace in the packet or online with them.

Any other thoughts on these?

GMPP is the best warranty to buy. It is honored by every GM dealer in the nation with absolutely no hassle.

Whatever option you chose on time and miles, those numbers are calculated from the original in service date and the original delivery miles. So if you buy a 5 year/75000 mile warranty it will expire 5 years from the purchase date or at 75XXX miles whicever occurs first.

$1380 cost is not bad. An A/C compressor replacement is $1200 an ABS module is $1100 a steering column is $1100 a fuel pump assembly is $800, I could go on and on. Plus they cover $50 in towing and $35/day on rental cars.

i bought a 72 month 100,000 extended...... i put alot of miles on a car, i usually dont keep a car longer than 2 years but i was thinking this might be the one i keep ..... 7 months old it has almost 15,000 miles on it... and if i dont keep it, one can transfer it, or i will cancel and get some money returned.. but i agree with servmgr... get the GM no hassels or waiting for check to see if covered......

my 05 sierra gmc truck had a the dual temp control go out.....it was covered....

Thanks, I did finally call them up and they told me the "new" coverage started the date I signed up. I guess since this is a extended after the purchase, they handle it a little different? But anyway, they said the covered mileage would start the day I signed up. So the 36/54000 would start at my mileage today and go from there. SO I may purchase one, but will wait until my factory warranty is almost up. The price change from under 24000 miles to over 24K (to 36K) is $1800 (or $1380 if I do it now). I just can't see starting it while I still have the factory warranty and they run together. On top of I could see. Doing it now would only give me an additional 18 months if I did it now. I'd rather pay the $1800 later and get the additional 3 years then.

ChevyMgr is right on...

I always get the extemded warranty. I drive 23,000+ miles per year and have never had a problem with the dealer honoring the coverage...

I always trade up after 2 years and transfer the warranty or get the cash refund.

Money well spent for peace of mind.

Whenever I got extended warrenties, anything that "broke" was not covered under the warrenty. I recieved an offer I could refuse for $69/month for the extended warrenty. $828/year was a little too pricey. I believe that if anything goes wrong with a new car, it will do it under the new car warrenty term. I'm getting close to the 36,000 mile end of the warrenty period. If I suspect anything major going wrong, the car is going.

Sort of like extended warrenties on appliances, at the amount for the coverage you may as well get a new appliance, if something goes wrong with it.

GMPP is the best of the best in extended warranties but, like Old Lar pointed out, everything that has broke on my cars was never covered by the warranty.

The warranty uses verbiage like, trim pieces not covered, OK, big deal but wait until you find out what is considered a trim piece. I had my rear view mirror go out (On Star, auto dimming) and it was NOT covered because it was classified as a trim piece. The dealer wanted $600, I replaced it with a Gentex for $200 and gave up the OnStar. I paid $900 for the GMPP (on a 2001 Buick) and it would have been less costly for me to self insure repairs.

With the new GM vehicles coming with a 5 year 100K mile powertrain warranty, I don't even consider the GMPP any more.

It does make your vehicle more attractive to a buyer if you plan to sell. The GMPP is transferable for a fee of $35, maybe more now.

Sounds like the offer I got, the $69/month is only for 18 months (interest free). Or just pay the $1380. I'll probably do it once I get close to my expiration of the warranty. In todays cars it doesn't take long to hit $2K in major repairs and it's much cheaper than buying a new car.....

the mileage is still the total......... if you buy a 60,000 or 72,000 or 100,000 not 36,000 plus 60,000 or whatever.... its the total....
