I took off the dealer sticker and FlexFuel badges from the rear as soon as I got home. I soon after shaved the GM chicklets, added roof rails, and a rear bumper cover. '55 chrome Chevrolet scripts were added to the hood. A GMPP intake followed, along with logo matts. Oh yes, I got rid of those Firestone tires I disliked. God Bless, Marc

Welcome from sunny SoCal!

One of the least expensive mods to do is taking off the "fishing pole" of an antenna and replacing it with a stubby -- about $10-20 depending on what style you want. This was my first mod--won't tell you what I have spent since on my baby.

Another is getting some high-heat bar-b-que spray paint (black) and painting the "roaster" (the muffler) -- that's about $3-5 for a can.

Good luck!

@ngelita
(I'm unemployed as well.)

My first mod was to cover the front, rear, and steering wheel bowtie. I changed it from the gold color to black. I bought a 3' piece of black vinyl from a local decal shop for about $5. It's the cheapest mod I've done to mine but I think it's the one I like the most

Debadging is free and gives your car a smooth look. Painting the bowties can be done fairly cheap as can tinting your taillights.

A brakelight overlay is pretty cheap too:

My first mod was lowering my baby, then i bought a custom S.S. upper and lower grill. Next will be to get some rubber for the used 17" wheels I bought and a tint job all the way around on the windows.

I debadged then added a stock hoop spoiler and then black chrome grill handles and beauty bar. One thing I would recommend is the TTR sway bar, got mine shortly after and have loved it ever since, one of the best thinks you could get for the HHR

Sway bar. Relatively cheap and extremely easy to install. You feel the instantaneous results, especially on country backroads. Check out our vendors if you're considering one.
