Handling in the snow
I have the Firestone Affinity on the 16" rims and they were not good in the snow if there was more than a couple of inches deep.
I think you have the Firehawks, which will likely be even worse than the Affinity tires in the snow.
We still need to get an Ottawa-area meet together. Maybe get some of the Quebecois down here, too.
The HHR is great in the snow. But how good any car is is largely dependent on what rubber it wears. Invest in 4 good snow tires like I did and you will have no problem. We had a pretty wild winter here this past year and the HHR was

In Indiana we get snow occasionally. I haven't driven my HHR in the snow yet. But it's front wheel drive how bad can it be? I had a Toyota Solara last winter with Goodyear Regatta's and it handled the snow very well. I have the 17 in. "215's" on the HHR the solara had "205's" so the tires are a little wider on the HHR than my old car had. I do think it does depend a little on the skill of the driver also.
Lets not think about snow YUCK... This i will tell ya this. I live on a Mt in NY near the Vermont and Mass borders and i have to start out on a nice incline and man this car SUCKS in the snow (my .02 cents) to the point even with snow tires i went out and bought a 4x4. If the roads have a little snow on them its so so and i can drive almost any car in any condition. I also work at a Ski Mt in Mass so i had to have a vehicle that can get me there EVERY day kinda cant call in cause of snow lol. The HHR is a great car just have had much better cars in the snow. NOW LETS GET OUR MINDS BACK IN TO SUMMER
I personally think that the factory firestones (mine were the 16" version) absolutely sucked in the snow, slush, and ice. I sold tires for quite a few years and know a little about the subject so I opted for a set of snows and what a huge difference. I drive over 100 miles each day in and out of Chicago weather and the HHR is my work car so I needed a dependable tire and those Firestones sure were not the answer for me......Regards
My first experience with this particular tire was when I put them (they were called Winterfire at the time) on my 96 Trans Am and my 95 Z28 back in the day. I worked for a tire wholesaler at the time and got to buy all my stuff at cost. I think back then they were around $40.00 each and figured....what do I have to loose? I mounted and balanced them for free and waited for some bad weather. They worked so well on those cars that I have been sold on them ever since.....Regards
