Has anybody tried the 4-HI headlight mod on an HHR?
 

I have done this mod on four cars over the past 15 years and wondering if it would work on the HHR.

What I have done in the past is wire a relay into the headlight system to make all four headlights come on when switching to hi-beam. Like when you pull your dimmer switch back while on lo-beam position, all four come on.

I took this a step futher with my last Pontiac van where I modified the low-beam plug to accept a hi-beam bulb. When on hi-beam all four lights were on with hi-beam Siliver Star Ultras. This made some nice light. I drive to work in the dark, on country roads, with hardly anyone else on the road.

I have only had one car this did not work on. When I did the mod and turned on the hi-beams all four lights came on then a circut breaker kicked them off.

Not sure about the HHR and how the headlight are configuered. I know that I have run 15-20 minutes at a time with the dimmer switch pulled back with all four beams on with on problems. Does anybody have any ideas why this type of mod wouldn't work on the HHR?

Since the hi/low are in the same bucket, would this modification cause a heat issue?

There is only one bulb per side, but each bulb has two elements, low and high. So technically you could do it, but it would probably blow the bulb or trip the fuse/breaker.

Heat build up at the socket might turn out to be the real issue.......

Guys that use higher wattage bulbs have trouble with burning out "sockets", actually a connector in our case. I would imagine that even if the wiring held the load long term, you would have to replace the socket evey couple of years.....
